Insulated Concrete Form Block

Insulated Concrete Forms, referred to as ICF, are interlocking modular units prepared for concrete to stay in place as permanent building insulation. The forms are manufactured using Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) connected by engineered webs made from recycled industrial polypropylene plastic.

The units resemble Styrofoam blocks, containing a center cavity in which concrete is filled. The webs inside the blocks are designed to allow horizontal reinforcement (steel) bars to be secured in place, creating a stronger support structure. As the blocks are stacked and joined, the concrete will fill the formwork in 1 to 4 foot “lifts” to reduce the risk of blowouts. The blocks are tested to withstand hydrostatic pressure of concrete.

After the concrete firms inside the formwork, it remains in place to serve as thermal and acoustic insulation. The internal space of the Styrofoam is utilized to run electrical wiring and plumbing installation. While the exterior backing of the blocks serves for stucco, brick, or other siding applications.
